May is Local History Month

May is Local History Month in North Yorkshire’s Libraries and to coincide with the 80th anniversary of VE Day there will be an exhibition in our library with information about 15 of the 16 men who are remembered on the war memorial in St Laurence’s Churchyard.  The 16th, Frank R Watson, can’t be traced so any information about him will be most welcome.  There will also be stories about a little girl evacuated to Scalby from London in 1944, the Spitfire that crashed in Scalby, where the bombs fell in the area, the log book of 1st Scalby Scout Camp in 1941, how the village celebrated VE Day and the list of the names on the Roll of Honour.

On Monday 12 May from 10.30am – 2.30pm Tom Richardson from North Yorkshire Archives will be in the library with a table-top display of county archives themed around Newby and Scalby during WW2.
