Our 60th Birthday!

Our present library building was officially opened on 10 February 1964.  Prior to that, Scalby Library was housed on the top floor of the Temperance Hall in the heart of Scalby village, and there was a Reading Room in the village before the Hall was built, in 1894.  We have a display about the library and its history in the library’s entrance and on Saturday 10 February we celebrated with our customers by offering them a piece of our special birthday cake.  We were delighted to welcome two former members of staff; Rosemary Ellis who was Librarian 1983-90 and Yvonne Forman (nee Merrill) who was one of our librarians in 1964.  We also have some lovely memories from customers who told us about the difference visiting our library has made to them and these are currently on display.  There is also a visitors’ book on our front desk in which you are invited to enter your memories and comments about the library.  Here’s some photos of the event, including photos of the trustees with Rosemary and Yvonne, some of our volunteers with Sophie Messenger, our library supervisor, Val Aston of great supporters Making a Difference Locally and Proudfoots cutting the cake and the displays about our history, photos of the library to the present date, and a selection of books from the late Queen’s Big Jubilee Read booklist, for the decades of her reign from the 1960s on.  Customers are welcome to borrow these great reads!
